As the New York Giants currently hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the mock drafts are becoming more frequent.
In recent mocks, the Giants have been targeting wide receivers frequently, which is clearly a need on New York’s roster.
However, in the latest mock draft from Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, the Giants trade up one spot with the Los Angeles Chargers to land quarterback UNC’s Drake Maye at No. 5 overall.
The Chargers, with new GM Joe Hortiz, may very well be interested in more picks. If Maye is available at No. 5, they’ll field plenty of calls. To ensure they get their guy, the Giants trade up one spot.
This type of trade would likely be a draft night trade where the Giants see an opportunity to get Maye later than anticipated after seeing him fall outside the top four.
Maye, who has been working with Eli Manning, was going second overall in mocks throughout the season but seems to have been jumped by LSU’s Jayden Daniels in recent projections.
This would signal moving on from Daniel Jones — something the Giants are reportedly not ready to do.
Of course, the Giants have needs up and down the roster. Although it seems unlikely, they would certainly have to do their due diligence regarding trading up one spot to land a prospect like Maye if they believe he could be a franchise QB to build around.
