Giants’ Tommy DeVito makes things right, puts an end to Pizzeria Gate

New York Giants rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito’s quick rise to stardom and notoriety has led to some unintended circumstances, such as what public appearances to keep and how much he should be compensated for his time.

The local New Jersey hero is wanted by everyone these days, which has heads spinning as well as false narratives such as the one where he snubbed a local restaurant by doubling his fee.

From ESPN:

Coniglio’s Old Fashioned pizzeria in Morristown announced on social media Sunday that it would no longer be hosting DeVito after the restaurant “received word from his agent that his appearance fee would be doubling” from $10,000 to $20,000. According to an Instagram post by Coniglio’s, DeVito’s representatives raised the appearance fee after DeVito led the Giants to a comeback victory over the Packers on “Monday Night Football” last week.

The New York Post reports that the owner of the restaurant said he “wanted to ‘believe’ in the DeVito that has been portrayed” and it “would break my heart if that wasn’t the case.” Coniglio also said he “felt sorry for the bad press that DeVito was getting as a result of the cancelled appearance.”

DeVito put the misunderstanding to bed on Tuesday by showing up to the restaurant for free to promote a charitable event — without his flamboyant agent, Sean Stellato.

“It was really important to me,” DeVito told The Post. “There was a lot going on at that time — and a lot of people doing different things as part of my team. Some things slipped through the cracks and as soon as I was made aware of it — which was Monday, when it hit my phone — that’s when I was like, “We need to go in there, meet him face to face, set things right, eat the awesome pizza and have fun.”

Tommy DeVito did a good thing here by turning a bad narrative into a positive one. It seems par for the course for the rising star, who appears to be a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy.
