The New York Giants have a new general manager, but it won’t be Kansas City Chiefs Executive Director of Player Personnel Ryan Poles.
The Giants have announced that they will hire Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen to succeed recently-retired GM Dave Gettleman. Schoen was one of three known finalists interviewing for the job along with Poles and San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters.
Poles had two interviews with New York before they ultimately landed on Schoen as their next GM.

The Giants are the first team with a GM vacancy to hire someone to fill the position and this may speed up the process for the rest of the league. Poles also interviewed once with the Minnesota Vikings for their GM vacancy. Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson reports that Poles had an “impressive” interview with Minnesota, so it’s still likely he’s in the running to land that job. They’ve interviewed a total of eight highly-qualified candidates so far.
Schoen landing the job immediately means that Bills OC Brian Daboll and DC Leslie Frazier could be considered head-coaching candidates in New York. That could be a bit of a distraction for Buffalo with the big divisional-round game against Kansas City coming up.
As for Poles, it’s important to remember that if he were to get any GM job, the NFL’s new system for developing minority coaches and personnel executives would apply. That means the Chiefs would be compensated with third-round compensatory picks in each of the next two drafts for his departure.
