Giants’ Sterling Shepard undergoes surgery to repair torn ACL

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard underwent a successful surgery to repair his torn ACL on Tuesday. The procedure came nearly a month after suffering the injury in a Week 3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Similar to running back Saquon Barkley and others before him, Shepard spent the last several weeks in rehab to reduce swelling and help accelerate the healing process.

Shepard had battled his way back from a ruptured Achilles before suffering the torn ACL in September, which immediately prompted a conversation about potential retirement. But the veteran receiver scoffed at the notion, saying he’s “a fighter” and has every intention on returning.

“Dang right. I’m a fighter,” Shepard said in early October. “So, I want to go out on my own terms. I don’t want something like this to make me go out. So, I’m going to fight to get my body back to where I can perform and get this thing good.”

A pending free agent, Shepard also expressed his appreciation for the Giants organization, the new regime and their willingness to not only bring him back this season, but allow him to remain around the team after his injury.

“They mean a lot to me. They didn’t have to give me another shot to come back off that Achilles, and they did. And I can’t thank this staff and ownership enough for the opportunities that they’ve given me,” he said. “And I feel like I owe so much to them. I want to give them my all; I don’t want to go out like this. So, like I said: I’m going to fight. I’m a fighter. So, that’s what I’m going to do.”

In three games, Shepard caught 13 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown.
