Giants star Hogan to return against Western Bulldogs

GWS will welcome back Jesse Hogan from a calf injury against the Western Bulldogs, but veteran Stephen Coniglio remains on the sidelines with an injury that has left the club "dumbfounded".

Hogan was sorely missed in their low-scoring affair against Adelaide, with the Giants only kicking one goal in the opening half before losing by 18 points in wet conditions.

But coach Adam Kingsley confirmed the reigning Coleman medallist has not suffered any setbacks and will be available to play at Manuka Oval on Saturday.

The same cannot be said about Coniglio, who continues to be plagued by a glute strain.

Coniglio, who was a chance to play this week, has not featured since round three.

Kingsley admitted the club has struggled to understand the extent of Coniglio's injury, along with small forward Brent Daniels' abdominal strain.

Daniels faces three to four weeks in recovery.

"That glute issue that he's (Coniglio) had is still lingering, so we haven't managed to get to the bottom of that," Kingsley said on Thursday.

"Brent Daniels is the same. He still hasn't recovered so we're a little dumbfounded about why they're taking so long.

"That's what our medical department's been doing, is searching the world around.

"Because Binga's is such a strange or uncommon injury, that's exactly what our medical team have been doing and trying to get to the bottom of exactly how we can fast-track that recovery."

Hogan's inclusion comes as Kingsley mulls the most effective way to nullify Marcus Bontempelli.

The Bulldogs skipper announced his return from a calf injury with a commanding performance in their 71-point demolition of St Kilda.

He may have missed the first five rounds through injury but showed no signs of rust, finishing with 30 disposals, eight clearances and two goals.

GWS tagger Toby Bedford looms as an option against Bontempelli, with Kingsley brushing away concerns about the height discrepancy.

Bedford stands at 174 centimetres, 14cm shorter than Bontempelli.

"Toby's done a really good job against Cripps (Patrick, Carlton captain) who's the same size," Kingsley said.

"If that's the way we go, then I'm not overly concerned with the size.

"It just depends whether he (Bontempelli) plays midfield or forward for them, but he's an outstanding player.

"Probably the best, if not one of the best players in the competition ... so he'll certainly come into considerations.

"But their midfield is really strong. Ed Richards has been in really great form.

"(Tom) Liberatore, I think is extremely underrated. He's arguably their most important player around their strength, which is the contest and stoppage.

"And Tim English, their ruckman, has caused us issues in the past, so it's a tough ask through the midfield, but we'll try our best."
