Giants select a cornerback in Pete Prisco’s first mock draft

The endless onslaught of NFL mock drafts is in full bloom and will continue for the next month until the actual draft is held and knocks everyone from their respective perches.

The New York Giants hold the 25th pick in the first round this year, their lowest draft position since 2012 when they took Virginia Tech running back David Wilson 32nd overall.

General manager Joe Schoen has done a banner job filling the many holes on his roster but still has much work to do.

In his first mock draft, CBS Sports analyst Pete Prisco sees Schoen fortifying one of the Giants’ shakiest position – cornerback.

No. 25. Deonte Banks, cornerback, Maryland

They had all kinds of issues at corner last year, so landing a young one who can step in and contribute right away is a must. Deonte Banks has the look of being that guy. They could also opt for more help on their offensive line.

All true. Many see a wide receiver here as a luxury now that Schoen has added Parris Campbell and Darren Waller (a tight end used more like a wideout) in addition to bringing back Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard.

Throw in Isaiah Hodgins and Wan’Dale Robinson and take out Kenny Golladay (who was cut) and the unit looks fairly solid. Plus, 6-foot-6 Collin Johnson — projected starter last year — is returning from a knee injury.

The selection of a cornerback in Round 1 and a center/interior offensive lineman in Round 2 is becoming most Giant fans’ favorite path in the upcoming draft.

Banks would be a great pick for the Giants. The 6-foot, 197-pounder ran a fleet 4.35 in the 40 at this year’s NFL combine and sizes up as a prototypical outside corner in the NFL — just what the Giants need.
