The New York Giants suffered defeat once again against the Philadelphia Eagles, this time on Christmas Day.
The Giants have extended their losing streak to five games against the Eagles. New York suffered a 33-25 loss in Philadelphia as they were unable to pull off the second-half comeback. They will get a rematch against their division rival in two weeks.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Giants in this loss.
Offense: C-
The Giants offense came out flat in the first half with Tommy DeVito at quarterback.
DeVito lacked any ability to make plays as he finished with a 14.1 QBR. This resulted in only three first-half points. Then the Giants made the transition to Tyrod Taylor, which allowed the offensive gameplan to open up. Taylor did throw one interception but was able to make up for it with a 69-yard touchdown to Darius Slayton.
The problem with this offense was that they could not extend drives as they went four for 14 on third-down conversions. This has been an issue all season but one thing that did improve was the offensive line as they only allowed one sack and six quarterback hits. This was mostly due to the nature of the game but it was good to see the quarterback not get sacked every other play.
Defense: B-
It always helps when the defense can score points.
Adoree’ Jackson returned an interception for a 76-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter to help cut the deficit to two entering the fourth quarter. That play alone bumps the defense up in the grading a lot.
Unfortunately, the defense could not make stops when needed as they allowed D’Andre Swift to run all over them in the fourth quarter. Swift ended with 92 yards and a touchdown averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
The Eagles also converted on eight of 15 third downs and both of their fourth downs which helped them extend drives and dominate the time of possession.
The Giants’ defensive line also did not help out as they only recorded one sack and three QB hits. Pass rush has been a problem all season and it showed out on Monday as the Giants were not able to get home against a good offensive line.
Special Teams: B
The special teams unit had a roller-coaster day on Christmas.
It started off with allowing a 54-yard punt return setting up an easy touchdown for the Eagles. However, after that the Giants special teams unit came to play as Mason Crosby nailed a 52-yard field goal, and both of his extra points.
The special teams unit also recovered a big fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half setting up a Saquon Barkley rushing touchdown. Jamie Gillan also did a great job overall flipping the field as he landed two punts inside of the twenty.
Coaching: C+
Brian Daboll & Co. did a great job keeping this game close in Philadelphia. This game was a tough ask from Big Blue and Daboll did a solid job even in a loss.
Even after going down big in the first half his team clawed back and fought hard. The decision to go for it on fourth-down worked out more times than it did not as they converted on 60 percent of their attempts.
Mike Kafka did an okay job calling up rushing plays for Saquon Barkley as he finished with 80 yards and a touchdown. Kafka did also draw up a deep shot to Slayton which needs to be done more often with the speedsters Big Blue has outside.
Wink Martindale drew up more pressure on Monday but still needs a big improvement going forward. Too often, Jalen Hurts had all the time in the world to make a decision. Also, when the Eagles had to run the ball out it was clear the ball was going to Swift and the Giants could not stop it which was unacceptable.
