Giants ready to boost firepower for Hawks clash

Greater Western Sydney are hoping the cavalry aren't far away, with stars Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer poised to return from injury against Hawthorn.

Fresh off a bye, the undefeated Giants will look to maintain their hot start to the AFL season by curbing the momentum of the early premiership favourites in Launceston.

Hogan (thumb) and Stringer (hamstring) aren't the only stars in frame to return for Saturday's match, with the Giants welcoming back plenty of firepower from suspension.

Forward Jake Riccardi heads four teammates who will return from a two-match ban, joined by Harvey Thomas, Joe Fonti and Toby McMullin.

Preferred ruck Kieren Briggs is also a test to return from a concussion.

GWS earned the round-two bye after hosting an opening round match against Collingwood, with defender Harry Himmelberg confident the time off had served them well.

"It was probably good timing for us," Himmelberg told AAP.

"We've got a few injured players that will hopefully come back this week, which is great.

"The team has been playing well without those guys, which is even better.

"We were able to get the first two wins of the season and start us off really well, but we've got some serious firepower coming back."

GWS have been without their main goal kicker after the reigning Coleman medallist Hogan broke his thumb.

He accidentally jammed it into the toilet door of a team bus after their final pre-season hit-out against Carlton.

Recruit Stringer endured an interrupted pre-season with illness before picking up a low-grade hamstring strain after a VFL practice match days out from the opening-round clash.

Scoreboard business has been shared across the Giants line-up, with Toby Greene (four goals) and Stephen Coniglio (three) leading their 15 goal kickers so far.

"They're (Hogan, Stringer) both looking like they're probably ready to go, but we'll see how this week goes," Himmelberg said.

"They're not the type of players that you want to rush back in either because it's a long year."

The added muscle comes after the Hawks surged to their first 3-0 start in 11 years.

Himmelberg expects another hard-fought contest, having watched Sam Mitchell's side outlast Carlton by 20 points last round.

"The bye is really handy. You get to watch plenty of footy," Himmelberg said.

"That's the beauty about having all the angles and the games recorded.

"You can watch exactly what worked and what didn't.

"They've played three games in a row, so we've got a good sample size of what their sort of strengths and weaknesses might be.

"They're a bloody good team, and they have some dangerous forwards that us as a back group will have to handle this week, for sure."
