Giants officially release QB Daniel Jones

The New York Giants have announced that quarterback Daniel Jones has been released, 24 hours after he read an emotional goodbye.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team,” co-owner John Mara said. “Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way.

“His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him.

“We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

It was evident from his tone on Thursday that Jones considered his time with the Giants over and indicated that he was likely to request his release.

After returning from their bye week, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that Jones had been demoted to QB3. He was demoted to QB4 a day later when the team signed Tim Boyle to their practice squad.

The decision to demote Jones was made both due to his poor play this season and his injury clause, which accounted for $23 million guaranteed in 2025.

Many of Jones’ teammates came to his defense following the benching, some publicly and others privately. One offensive player called the decision to sit Jone “weak as (expletive).”

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and wide receiver Darius Slayton were among those to publicly endorse Jones with Lawrence saying he was clearly the best quarterback on the roster.

“I wish Daniel the best,” Daboll told reporters. “A lot of respect for him. True pro. I wish him all the best.”

Jones will now be subject to waivers. However, due to his contract, it’s expected that he will clear at 4:01 p.m. ET on Saturday and be free to sign with another team.
