The news comes on the heels of a major blow-up between Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll. Wink indicated he was “done” with the Giants, but the team had no plans to fire him and he had not resigned as of earlier Wednesday.
It is unclear whether he resigned or was fired, but it is highly unlikely that there was anything mutual happening behind closed doors. Martindale has been on the outs with Daboll since the middle of the season and tensions have only escalated since then.
Martindale’s final straw was the firing of both Drew and Kevin Wilkins. The defense was a semi-bright spot this year, and the linebackers specifically saw a lot of improvement. But really, these two were headed in different directions a while ago and the way this season went only widened the gap.
Now the hunt begins for his replacement.
