Giants likely to sign a quarterback following Drew Lock injury

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said during his Zoom media session on Friday that the team could be in the market for a quarterback this week if backup Drew Lock (hip) is going to miss significant time.

Lock left Thursday’s 14-3 preseason win over the Detroit Lions with a hip injury after getting squashed to the turf by a Lions defender.

Lock’s absence now seems likely despite optimism from Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen on Thursday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Lock could be out for “some time,” but does not need surgery for his bone contusion.

The Giants have been carrying only three quarterbacks since releasing Nathan Rourke two weeks ago. Rourke has since been signed by the Atlanta Falcons.

The Giants’ next preseason game is next Saturday versus the Texans in Houston. The first-teamers are expected to see action in that game.

Meanwhile, Daboll liked what he saw from his young running backs against Detroit. The Giants rushed for 155 yards with an average of 5.7 yards per attempt.

The Giants will have an off day on Saturday and resume training camp practices on Sunday.
