With Graham Gano on injured reserve (IR), the New York Giants are unsettled at the kicker position at the moment.
Last week they signed two kickers, Randy Bullock and Cade York, to the 53-man roster and practice squad, respectively, in hopes that one of them would be able to fill Gano’s shoes.
One week and one game later, Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey isn’t sure you will kick for the Giants this Sunday in Dallas.
“They’re just both working, and we’ll see where we’re at at the end of the week,” McGaughey told reporters on Thursday. “It’s a rhythm thing. Who we feel the most comfortable with, who we think is the most comfortable, and just go from there.”
Last week, Bullock was the active kicker but saw no action versus the Raiders in Las Vegas other than the second-half kickoff. When the Giants scored a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter, they attempted a two-point conversion rather than wheel out Bullock for the PAT.
The Giants’ usual kicking plan has been set for several years with Gano, holder Jamie Gillan and long-snapper Casey Kreiter. They are so familiar with the ‘operation’ that they don’t need to drill excessively.
With a new kicker, or kickers, that should be changing but McGaughey said it’s business as usual.
“We kick on our own,” he said. “We do a lot of stuff on our own. But with the team, it’s only, like, six to eight reps. So, it’s not a lot with the team. But it’s more so of what we do when we’re by ourselves.”
We’ll see how this all works out should the Giants get an opportunity to attempt a field goal or PAT this Sunday.
