Giants’ Kenny Golladay shoulders blame for drop vs. Patriots

New York Giants wide receiver Kenny Golladay is under pressure. After signing a $72 million deal last March and then falling flat last season, he’s got a lot prove this summer.

Thus far, Golladay — who did not have a touchdown catch last season — has not shown much improvement, if any. In the Giants’ preseason win in New England last Thursday, Golladay dropped a key third down pass on the Pats’ five-yard line costing the Giants a chance at a touchdown.

Head coach Brian Daboll seemed to indicate the drop was caused by a low throw from quarterback Daniel Jones, but Golladay himself disagrees.

“I definitely wish I would’ve come up with it,” Golladay told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s something that we definitely talk about as far as just the route itself. I want to say Wan’Dale at three, Collin (Johnson) at two, and I was outside. Kind of trying to take my time a little bit for those guys, but at the end of the day I have to make the play.”

Golladay is not discouraged by his failures. He is determined to succeed.

“First off, I’m my biggest critique pretty much so, other people that say anything about me, they’re not going to be harder than I am on myself. But I think it’s really just coming into work with that hard hat on every day and just keeping your head down, and trusting the process and just grinding,” he said.

Golladay says the Giants and their fans haven’t seen the real Kenny Golladay, the one who made the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in touchdown catches in 2019 with the Detroit Lions.

“No, I wouldn’t say so,” he said when asked if we have seen the real him yet.

“Maybe I probably showed glimpses last year in New Orleans a little bit, I definitely would say I got a lot to prove, not just everybody else. I would say to myself I’m always in a daily competition with myself, just trying to better myself each and every day.”

The Giants are thin at receiver and they need the real Golladay to show up soon.
