Giants have entered into negotiations with QB Daniel Jones

The New York Giants face a critical offseason in Joe Schoen’s second as the team’s general manager. At the top of his list is retaining both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley, both of whom are set to hit free agency next month.

Like they have with Barkley, the team has now begun negotiations with their quarterback.

The Giants were unsuccessful in their attempts to come to an agreement with Barkley during the bye week. They did not engage with Jones or his reps at the time.

The Giants intend to keep Jones following his breakout season, but at what cost? Jones’ market value is estimated in the range of $35 million per season and they would prefer to get a deal done before free agency to avoid using the franchise tag on him.

The Giants declined Jones’ fifth-year option last offseason with uncertainty surrounding his future with the team. But DJ put that uncertainty to rest with his strong season, surprisingly leading the Giants to the postseason.

The Giants have the fourth-most cap space in the league, a much better situation than they found themselves in a year ago. However, with plenty of spots needing improvement across the roster, the Giants will have to get the best deal possible for Jones.
