Giants had positive last-second meeting with Saquon Barkley

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen spent the better part of his Monday negotiating with quarterback Daniel Jones and his representatives.

The agents from Athletes First flew out to East Rutherford and reports suggest the two sides closed the financial gap significantly. Ultimately, however, they did not come to an agreement on a long-term deal. Yet.

Shortly after those meetings with Jones and his reps, Schoen pivoted and held a last-second meeting with the agents of running back Saquon Barkley.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the meeting was “positive” and there is continued hope they can also reach a new long-term deal despite being far apart entering the week.

Barkley’s future is largely tied to Jones’ deal. If the Giants can get their quarterback under contract prior to Tuesday’s 4:00 p.m. ET franchise tag deadline, they are expected to designate Barkley. If not, they will be forced to designate Jones, leaving Barkley to hit the open market — from which he will not likely return.

Although Monday’s meeting was considered positive, a large gap remains between Barkley’s contractual demands and what the Giants have been offering.

The team now has just hours to figure all of this out.
