Giants DC Wink Martindale says Dolphins offense is faster than ‘Greatest Show on Turf’

Through four weeks of the 2023 campaign, the Miami Dolphins are the league’s top offense in terms of scoring (37.5 points per game) and total yardage (511 yards per game).

Their pair of electric wide receivers, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, opens up so much for the rest of the offense that even when they’re not getting the ball, they’re the focal point of a play.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa brings impeccable decision-making skills and delivers an accurate ball to his weapons, making it nearly impossible to beat when everything’s running well.

On top of that, head coach and offensive play-caller Mike McDaniel has found a new dynamic playmaker early in the year, as rookie running back De’Von Achane has already made a name for himself in his three appearances.

Miami’s explosive offense is something that teams have to prepare for meticulously, and this week, New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale spoke about the challenge of prepping for this weekend’s battle.

“My wife called me last night before she went to bed,” Martindale said. “She said she was worried about me. She said, ‘Are you getting any sleep?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m sleeping like a baby; every two hours, I wake up and cry and go to the bathroom and try to go back and get some more sleep …’

“I told our guys, not the players, I told our staff because we’re all old enough to remember ‘The Greatest Show on Turf.’ This is like that — 2023 supersonic. I mean, they are fast. Faster than that. That’s the whole thing that in preparing a team going into this environment, that’s not even turf there. It’s grass, and they’re still faster.

“This quarterback is playing at a high level. I’ve got a lot of respect for the kid. He knows where to go with the football. He’s accurate. He gets rid of it quick. I can’t say enough about Mike because of the situations that he puts him in where he can get rid of the ball quick, and he’s got those receivers and the right route concepts and everything else to get it to them quick. I’m not just saying quick like three-yard routes. He’s throwing them before receivers come out of breaks and it’s just put right there on them.”

The offense is getting the respect they deserve. They may have taken a step back against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, but there’s no reason why they can’t see an improvement against the Giants and put up over 30 again.
