Giants’ Davis Webb on first start: ‘That was something I’ll never forget’

Quarterback Davis Webb, who was selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft, very nearly retired prior to the start of this season.

The Buffalo Bills wanted to hire him as their quarterback coach and it was something Webb had given serious consideration to. But then Brian Daboll, his former offensive coordinator, came calling and Webb decided to hold off on making the shift to coaching.

Instead of working directly with Josh Allen, Webb returned to the Giants and would give his playing career one final chance. And while things did not go exactly according to plan, Daboll & Co. did have one final surprise for Webb in Week 18.

With the decision to sit Daniel Jones, the Giants had a choice: Tyrod Taylor or Webb.

As a reward for his hard work and dedication, the Giants gave Webb the nod on Sunday. He would make his first career start against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Although the Giants would lose, 22-16, Webb managed to record a few firsts, including two touchdowns — one rushing and one passing. He ultimately finished the game with 209 total yards, the two scores, and no turnovers.

“Very thankful for that opportunity,” Webb told reporters after the game. “I’m thankful for (my coaches and teammates). They supported me all week.

“We battled and (the Eagles) are a really good team. They’re the number one seed in the NFC. We took them four quarters. I wish myself, first, and the offense, second, got off to a better start. But, that second half was really fun and that’s something I’ll never forget.”

Webb also took several moments to run down a laundry list of names, thanking each along the way. It ranged from general manager Joe Schoen all the way down to wide receiver Marcus Johnson, and just about everyone in between.

What the future holds for Webb is unclear but he finally got his moment. And it came in front of his parents, girlfriend, and family.
