Giant crane helps transform Liverpool Echo offices into hotel

Old Hall Street in Liverpool was taken over by a huge crane this weekend.

Theroad was closed to fit the yellow Goliath in place to help workers transforming the former Liverpool Echo offices into a hotel . That hotel, run by Spain's Meliá Hotels International Group, is set to open next year.

On Sunday morning, it was lifting pieces of masonry and other material from the roof of the building, now called Echo Place and currently covered in scaffolding.

The roof previously held the plant machinery for the building, but is being renovated to become a sky bar for hotel guests.

The masonry was brought down piece by piece, guided by workers on the rooftop and in the street, before being removed and broken up.

It was clearly visible form the Echo's new offices on St Paul's Square, just over the road.

Work is well underway on creating the 207-room hotel, with the rest of the building becoming offices and shops.

Plans are also in place for a gym in the podium of the building.

The tower is the joint tenth-tallest building in the city and the sky bar, with an outside terrace, would boast stunning views across the Mersey and the city.

Closer to street level, Sony recently announced it would be moving 500 workers from Wavertree to the Old Hall Street building.

it will lease three floors of office space.

Echo Place is being redeveloped by the ECHO's parent company Reach and the Dubai-based  Select Group.
