Giants coach puts heat on his AFL midfield

GWS are yet to learn whether they will have to contend with Dustin Martin on Sunday. (AAP)

GWS coach Leon Cameron is putting the heat on his midfielders to rise to the AFL challenge of playing a Richmond side with or without Dustin Martin.

Tigers star Martin has taken time away from his club, with his status for Sunday's MCG fixture against the Giants uncertain.

Cameron says he'll plan for both scenarios: a Tigers side with and without their ace.

"He is such a super player of the competition, so first and foremost hopefully he is okay and he bounces back as quick as he possibly can," Cameron told reporters on Thursday.

"Clearly, you prepare for all scenarios.

"Whether he plays or whether he doesn't, you're dealing with a hungry midfield from last week -- no doubt they will be disappointed with what happened against Carlton.

"We're expecting a really, really hard midfield to take it up to us.

"But equally we need to make sure that we get out of the blocks in that area as well.

"So we'll be challenging our mids, we will be challenging our rucks.

"Because if the ball can be in our half of the ground a bit more than theirs, then clearly it gives us a great chance to knock them over."

Cameron is tossing up whether to recall Braydon Preuss as ruck support for Matt Flynn, noting the task of matching Richmond's ruckmen Tony Nankervis and Ivan Soldo.

"We know their two rucks are big boys, Nankervis and Soldo are huge for them," he said.

"It's clearly a heavy discussion to play the both of them. We have just got to make sure we're well balanced in the other areas of the ground ... it's not over the line yet."

But Cameron was certain of one thing: the Giants wanted to mark club stalwart Callan Ward's 250th game milestone in style.

"He has been a super player for us," he said.

"His character is just unbelievable on and off the field. He's a well-rounded person.

"We know what he does on the field in terms of his hardness and his competitiveness, he never gives up.

"So when those milestones come along for such a special person at our footy club, you want to put your best foot forward.

"I'm sure the other 22 players that run out with him will want to make sure it's a significant day for him ... hopefully we can celebrate Wardy in the right manner."
