Giants coach Brian Daboll lays out how QB Daniel Jones returns to the lineup

The New York Giants went through their third straight game without quarterback Daniel Jones.

The former 2019 first-rounder has been sidelined with a neck injury. The Giants have gone 1-2 with Tyrod Taylor in relief.

Week 8 demonstrated what Jones’ absence meant to the offense. The New York Jets edged the Giants 13-10 in overtime. Taylor and Tommy DeVito combined for 6-of-14 for seven yards. As maligned as Jones has been for his play, it has never been as horrendous as it was for the Giants in Week 8.

Daboll provided remarks as to how the process is unfolding and when the Giants can expect Jones back in the lineup.

Daboll told reporters Monday that Jones met with the team doctor in the pregame Sunday and went through his tests. The tests were conducted a week ago on Friday. Daboll said he was not aware of Jones’ tests until after the game. According to Daboll, Jones is cleared for practice for Week 9.

Sticky designation

While Jones has been out the past three games, he has had different designations on the final injury report.

On Oct. 20’s injury report ahead of the Washington game, Jones was questionable. However, on Oct. 27’s injury report before the Jets game, Jones was already ruled out.

According to Daboll, the designation had more to do with final confirmation from the doctors than it did Jones’ actual status.

“It was Friday at 3:30, I believe, his appointment to see where he was at,” Daboll explained. “That was the — whatever it was two Friday’s ago and then he didn’t have one this week. So, like I said, when they told me he was out, that’s when I told you guys he was out.”

Taylor spent the night in the hospital with his rib injury, and Jones is merely cleared to practice. The Giants may have to go with DeVito was the starter on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders. Daboll stated he would meet with general manager Joe Schoen about possibly bringing in veterans for workouts.
