New York Giants right tackle Evan Neal has had a rough season. He’s appeared in just seven games and is doubtful again this week, nursing an ankle injury.
Even when he was on the field this season, Neal hasn’t played well — certainly not what was expected from him after last season.
Most would assume that when he’s healthy, Neal will return to the starting lineup. However, head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t commit to it when asked about that on Friday.
“I’d just say he’s working to get better. We’ll see. Cross that bridge when we get to it,” Daboll told reporters.
The next question was about Tyre Phillips’ play as he’s been covering for Neal. Daboll seemed far more enthused when talking about Neal’s replacement.
“He’s done a nice job,” the coach said.
This appears to leave the door open for Phillips to remain the starter even after Neal is cleared to play.
Neal has two options when he’s healthy: Either put in the work to improve and earn that starting spot back or be ready to back up Phillips when the time comes.
