Giants bench Tommy DeVito, fall to Eagles, 33-25, on Christmas Day

The New York Giants failed to deliver a Christmas Day miracle on Monday afternoon, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 33-25, at Lincoln Financial Field.

The loss officially eliminates the Giants from the playoffs, effectively ending another disastrous season for the organization. And in the process, head coach Brian Daboll benched quarterback Tommy DeVito, who had been the toast of the town.

However, to their credit, the Giants fought and clawed for four full quarters but could not overcome both the Eagles and NFL officials, who were atrocious throughout the game.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 5-10 on the season.

Keys to the game

  • The Giants were outgained, 465 to 292.
  • New York lost the turnover battle, 2-1.
  • The Eagles dominated time of possession, 34:38 to 22:22.
  • The Giants went just 4-14 on third down.

It was over when...

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw an interception in the end zone with no time left on the clock. The Giants argued that there was a defensive pass interference (a solid argument) but the referees were having none of it. They wanted to get home to their families for Christmas so they pretended it didn’t happen.

Players of the game

  • RB Saquon Barkley (84 total yards, 1 TD)
  • WR Darius Slayton (3 rec. for 90 yards, 1 TD)
  • LB Bobby Okereke (10 tackles, 1 PD)

Injuries

Offensive lineman Justin Pugh got a little banged up in the first half but was able to return. The Giants did not list him with a designation or detail his injury.

Rookie cornerback Deonte Banks suffered a shoulder injury and was listed as questionable to return. He never made it back into the game.

Tight end Darren Waller suffered an unspecified injury late in the fourth quarter following a big hit. Although there was no time left for the team to issue a designation, it was clear the injury was significant.

Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers on Tuesday afternoon before a few players are also made available.

Big Blue will return to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, December 31 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. ET.
