Giants among world’s most profitable sports teams over past 3 years

The New York Giants were a surprise in 2022, compiling a 9-7-1 record and picking up their first playoff victory since Super Bowl XLVI. However, the two years prior to that were among the worst in franchise history.

Under former general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge, the Giants picked up just 10 wins (to 23 losses) and had a combined point differential of -235.

It was the worst two-year stretch for the Giants’ franchise since “The Wilderness Years.”

Despite that, Giants fans remained reluctantly loyal to the team. Home games routinely sold out (once attendance was allowed post-pandemic) and merchandise still flew off the shelves. Advertisers didn’t shy away and money continued to flow. In fact, the Giants remained one of the NFL’s most profitable teams.

Mike Ozanian of Forbes reports that from 2020 through 2022, the Giants were the NFL’s fourth-most profitable team behind the Houston Texans (third), New England Patriots (second), and Dallas Cowboys (first).

The Giants saw a three-year operating income total of $333 million, which was also good for the ninth-most of any sports franchise on the entire planet. And they were just a fraction behind the Los Angeles Lakers for eighth-most.

The Cowboys, of course, led all sports franchises with a whopping $1.2 billion in operating income over those three years.

Combined with the Giants (and other teams) seeing a decrease in gate profits during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the fact that they still pulled in $333 million goes to show just how remarkably popular they are and how dominant the NFL has become.
