Giant banana by Castle Park has makeover to show solidarity with Ukraine

The giant banana at the edge of Castle Park has had a makeover to show solidarity with Ukraine.

Bristol-based artist Duncan Mckellar first installed the giant banana made from yellow scaffolding tubes back in 2020. The piece of art is located in front of the old Norwich Union building on High Street in the city centre.

The piece has now been modified to incorporate some blue scaffolding tubes. And the artist wrote on Instagram that the changes were an attempt to show solidarity with Ukraine.

He wrote: "Meanwhile back in Bristol. Hope. My attempt to show solidarity with Ukraine. Tough one to build.

"This is the sixth iteration using scaffold foam on Castle Park. Definitely the toughest.

"I’ve had to leave it looking scrappy after struggling with the thumbs. I’ll be back next week to finish it off.

"Great fun also working alongside the amazing @hazard0ne who’s created this epic portrait on the building’s facade.."

This corner of Castle Park is at the centre of controversial plans for a major development in Bristol city centre. There are plans for nine-storey tower blocks at the High Street end of Castle Park, a site known as St Mary le Port.

The plan, which would replace some of the city’s worst eyesore buildings on the corner of Wine Street and the High Street and replace them with a new complex of offices and shops, has already been given planning permission. However, the Government is is to be asked to step in and hold its own public inquiry.
