Ghislaine Maxwell 's appeal is in jeopardy as her estranged husband has refused to pay her legal bill, it has been reported.
Earlier this year, the 60-year-old was sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping the late Jeffrey Epstein in his sex trafficking scheme.
She is serving her time at Florida’s low-security FCI Tallahassee prison.
Her estranged husband Scott Borgerson, 45, is reportedly ignoring her requests for $1million (£845,000) after she was dumped via phone in jail, it has been claimed.
It is claimed that Maxwell's legal team cannot begin working on any appeals against her conviction and 20-year prison sentence until the funds are transferred.
The deadline to lodge these appeals is the end of January.
Mr Borgerson controls almost all of Maxwell's funds through a trust fund, which includes what she has left from the £12.6million sale of her New York home, The Sun on Sunday reports.
It was previously reported that the firm was repeatedly told by Kevin Maxwell that Borgerson was in control of Maxwell’s assets and that it was because of him the payments were delayed.
Mr Borgerson, who married Maxwell in 2016, reportedly met with her brother Kevin and her US lawyers to discuss the appeal.
A source claimed to the paper that Mr Borgerson was “being difficult” but promised to send the funds.
However, in a separate instance, the firm later accused him of acting under “false pretenses” after not receiving the money.
The source added: “Her lawyers have not been paid. That is a serious matter in itself.
“Worse, she needs to come up with another $1million to fund the appeal. Right now, Scott’s given her nothing.”
When contacted by The Mirror, Mr Borgerson pointed to a court document from September that showed Colorado law firm Haddon, Morgan and Foreman, which acted for Maxwell in the trial, said Mr Borgerson "expressed cooperation, transparency and honesty" in regards to the "alleged transfers of property".
He refused to comment further.
In August, the law firm filed a lawsuit against Maxwell, her brother Kevin and Mr Borgerson over unpaid legal fees.
The document sent by Mr Borgerson to The Mirror showed the firm dropped him from the suit less than a month later.
It reads that the firm "voluntarily dismisses its claims against Defendant Scott Borgerson without prejudice.
"HMF and Mr Borgerson have recently engaged in a productive dialogue regarding the alleged transfers of property at issue in this litigation.
"Mr Borgerson has expressed cooperation, transparency, and honesty in those discussions. Accordingly, his dismissal from this lawsuit is appropriate and in the interest of justice."
HMF chose not to comment when approached by The Mirror.
Last month, Maxwell gave her first interview since her arrest in June 2020, she spoke about Prince Andrew, disgraced paedophile Epstein and one of his alleged accusers Virginia Giuffre.
Speaking about the Duke of York, she told The Sun on Sunday : "I feel so bad for him. I follow what is happening to him.’’
When she was reportedly told that Andrew's legal team claimed they were not close friends, she added: "I accept that this friendship could not survive my conviction.
“He is paying such a price for the association. I consider him a dear friend. I care about him.”
The Sun on Sunday's explosive piece is from two interviews - one conducted behind bars in Florida and the other in June at New York's notorious Metropolitan Detention Centre.
Maxwell also spoke of her regrets about her connection with Epstein and said if she could go back she would "make different choices".
Epstein, 66, was found dead in a jail cell, in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
