In a controversial move, Ghana's parliament recently passed a bill criminalizing LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies, sparking widespread condemnation from the international community. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the legislation, labeling it as 'profoundly disturbing' and urging for it not to be enacted into law.

The bill, which was first introduced three years ago, extends criminal sanctions to include consensual same-sex relationships, sexual activities, and public displays of affection within the LGBTQ+ community. It also targets supporters and the promotion of LGBTQ+-related activities, with potential penalties of up to ten years in prison for those found guilty.

Despite Ghana's reputation for upholding human rights, the passing of this bill has raised alarms globally. The United States has voiced its unease, citing potential threats to freedom of speech and calling for a review of its constitutionality. The attorney general and minister of justice has indicated that any legislation must align with the country's constitution before being signed into law.

Rights groups, such as the Center for Democratic Development, have vowed to challenge the bill through legal means, including potential court action. LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana have expressed fears for their safety and the well-being of those around them, highlighting the detrimental impact of the proposed law on their lives.

One queer individual, speaking anonymously, lamented the lack of respect for democracy and human rights demonstrated by the bill's passage. The individual expressed concerns about continuing to live in a country that criminalizes their existence, reflecting the broader anxieties within the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.

The bill now awaits the president's decision on whether to sign it into law, amidst growing calls for its rejection both domestically and internationally.
