GetUp outlines target seats for election

Left-wing activists GetUp will target seats 'on the frontline of the climate crisis'. (AAP)

Marginal seats most affected by national disasters, as well as seats with strong pro-climate change independent candidates, will be targeted by left-wing advocacy group GetUp.

The group says it will use its "one million member strong movement" to target the seats of Macquarie, Eden-Monaro, Gilmore, and Page in regional NSW and Ryan in Brisbane.

Election co-director Larissa Baldwin say the five seats are on the frontline of the climate crisis.

"The Morrison government has let people down. Right now we have people across the country still living in temporary housing after the bushfires and evacuating from floods a second time," she said.

"From the bushfires, drought and floods to the pandemic, the government acted to protect itself and its wealthy donors, and left people to fend for themselves in times of national crisis."

GetUp will also target Goldstein and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg's seat of Kooyong in Melbourne, as well as Mackellar in Sydney, where incumbent Liberal MPs are facing challenges from independents pushing for more climate action.

"You can't leave politics to politicians who are acting in the best interests of their corporate mates, or are held hostage by climate deniers in their own party," Ms Baldwin said.

Lingiari in the Northern Territory, Leichhardt in northern Queensland and Parkes in central NSW are also on the hit list due to housing issues and health problems for large Indigenous communities.

"GetUp is backing the people the Morrison government refuses to listen to," Ms Baldwin says.

"That neglect was felt especially strongly by First Nations people across the country. Remote communities trying to keep COVID out were left to instigate their own lockdowns, with almost no government support."
