People in Stretford and Urmston are being urged to make sure they are eligible to vote ahead of a Parliamentary by-election on December 15. The poll has been prompted after Kate Green vacated her seat in Parliament.
Acting retuning officer Sara Todd wants people to make sure they are registered to vote – and warned people that their by-election polling station might be different to the one they are used to. She said: “Voting is a massive part of our democratic process – who we choose to represent us in Parliament is so important. Therefore, we want to give the chance to vote to everyone who can do.”
If people are already registered to vote, they don’t have to do anything. However, if they have recently moved or have recently turned 18, they might have to register via https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. The deadline to receive applications is Tuesday, November 29.
Residents should also be aware that their polling station might be different to their usual one. This is because many venues are booked to host Christmas events, as well as other practical difficulties in organising a December by-election.
Mrs Todd, who is chief executive of Trafford council, said: “While we always seek to use polling stations which are familiar to voters, for the by-election on December 15, it simply has not been possible and there will be a number of different buildings being used as polling stations.”
Residents’ polling station details will be on their polling card, which will be posted out shortly.
Directions to all new polling stations will also be posted on the old polling stations as an added precaution. From next week, residents can also check their polling station by visiting www.trafford.gov.uk/about-your-council/elections/polling-stations.aspx.
