Germany's Beta Film is introducing at the London TV Screenings the first episode of 'Maxima,' a six-part drama about the love story between future Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and the then Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. The series is produced by Millstreet Films, with Videoland (RTL Netherlands) holding Dutch broadcasting rights.
'Maxima' is adapted from the biography written by Dutch journalist Marcia Luyten in celebration of the Queen's 50th birthday and focuses mainly on how the political background of Maxima's father interfered with her very public engagement to the Crown Prince.
Justus Riesenkampff, EVP Nordics & Benelux at Beta Film, highlighted that 'Maxima' was 'especially appealing because royal stories resonate well.' He mentioned that it's the second TV series made about a living royal, after 'The Crown,' and emphasized the clash of cultures and a larger-than-life love story with a happy ending.
The series' producer, Rachel van Bommel, noted a 'Shakespearian' quality to the real-life story behind the show, particularly referencing the controversy surrounding Queen Máxima's father, Jorge Zorreguieta, due to his political history.
Director Saskia Diesing found a personal connection to the narrative, given her own experience of moving countries and confronting her past. The series was shot in various locations, with Buenos Aires scenes filmed in Europe due to logistical reasons.
The production team ensured authenticity by casting actors from the respective nationalities of the characters. The dedication to accuracy has resonated well with audiences, including in Latin America, where the show is set to find a home.
'Maxima' has also garnered interest from younger viewers, with positive feedback received during audience screenings. The series is described as a great drama that can be enjoyed even without prior knowledge of the Dutch royal family, making it a highlight of Beta Film's slate this year.
