German legend targets emphatic Euro 2024 victory over Scotland as Neuer doubt raised

Philipp Lahm wants Germany to begin Euro 2024 with an "emphatic" victory against Scotland.

The hosts haven't got a good recent record in opening games of major tournaments having lost to Mexico at the 2018 World Cup, France at Euro 2020 and Japan at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And Lamb knows the importance of avoiding unnecessary pressure by winning that first game at the Allianz Arena next Friday night. Even though Steve Clarke's Scots, backed by a strong Tartan Army, will be out to spoil the party and make it a miserable four in a row for the Germans.

Discussing the much-anticipated fixture, the former Bayern Munich defender said: "You could see in the last few Finals that if you don't start well, you're immediately under pressure and from there it's difficult.

"That's why I want an emphatic victory against the Scots, which starts the bandwagon of enthusiasm.

"Not just a narrow win, but a good victory. But I am really hopeful we can start the Euros with a good performance and build it from there."

Germany's Euro preparations finished with a 2-1 win over Greece but there remains doubt whether first choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer can still perform at the highest level following a series of high-profile mistakes - including during the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

That was highlighted by German hero Lothar Matthaus, who reckons a change needs to be made between the sticks and has urged Julian Nagelsmann to bench the 38-year-old shot-stopper quickly because he no longer provides that security to the team in front of him.

"We cannot deny these mistakes are mounting," he stated. "That's obvious to anyone and there are too many of them. He has made repeated individual errors not just with the national team but with Bayern Munich too.

"The absolute security that you used to be able to rely on him has gone. In fact, the whole performance was worrying. There was a great atmosphere in the stands but it wasn't matched on the pitch. It was hardly the dream send-off this team and manager would have liked."
