German breweries may have to stop making beers as Putin's actions threaten Oktoberfest

There are fears Germany may be forced to axe this year's Oktoberfest and Christmas markets after Putin throttled its gas supplies.

Russian-state energy giant Gazprom cut supplies to the country by 20 per cent earlier this week, at a time when gas prices are already skyrocketing.

Officials in Hanover have announced that heating in public buildings and swimming pools will be turned off to save energy, while Berlin is switching off spotlights lighting up historic monuments.

Other cities are also expected to find ways to limit energy use, The Sun reports.

Rosi Steinberger, a member of Bavaria’s regional parliament, told the New York Times that Oktoberfest celebrations could be cancelled, along with the country's much loved Christmas markets.

Meanwhile, non-essential industries, among them Bavaria's breweries - may be asked to halt production.

Germans have been told they will face a "gas surcharge" in addition to the already high energy bills to stop suppliers from going bust.

Robert Habeck, the economy minister said: "We can't say yet how much gas will cost in November, but the bitter news is it's definitely a few hundred euros per household."

The new charge will be in place in October and is set to last at least until March 2024.

Belgium, The Sun also reports, has reversed its phase-out of nuclear energy, while the Netherlands and Austria are switching to coal-fired power plants.

Before the Ukraine war, Germany bought 55 per cent of its natural gas from Russia.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has launched a national drive to save energy, with the EU agreeing this week to slash Russian gas use across the bloc.

The drive includes recommendations such as turning off air con, using public transport more, and using energy efficient shower heads.

It is feared Russia could cut off supplies this winter in an act of retaliation for the sanctions imposed on the country by Europe because of the Ukraine-Russia war.
