FC Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has been implicated in a corruption and money laundering scandal that has rocked the football world. The investigation's main prosecutor has suggested that Pique's involvement could be as serious as that of Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) chief.
The probe, which also involves Rubiales, centers around contracts related to the Spanish Super Cup being held in Saudi Arabia. Pique's company, Kosmos, is alleged to have played a role in taking the competition to the Middle East, leading to suspicions of illegal commissions amounting to €24 million ($26 million).
The investigation has raised concerns about the business practices of both the RFEF and Pique. It is alleged that the RFEF's contract with Saudi Arabia was contingent on payments to Pique, with the threat of contract termination if these commissions were not received.
According to the prosecutor, there was another lucrative offer from Qatar that did not involve commission agents, highlighting the questionable nature of the dealings involving Pique and Kosmos.
Pique, who retired from professional football in November 2022, has since been involved in the successful launch of the King's League. However, his return to FC Barcelona to watch a recent match against Las Palmas has been overshadowed by the unfolding scandal.
The prosecutor's statements have cast a shadow over Pique's reputation, suggesting that he may face legal repercussions as the investigation progresses. The seriousness of the allegations has drawn comparisons to the downfall of Rubiales, underscoring the potential impact on Pique's legacy as a football icon.
