French actor Gérard Depardieu, who is facing trial for alleged sexual assaults of two women on a film set in 2021, will not appear before a criminal court in Paris on Monday due to health reasons, as confirmed by his lawyer.
Depardieu, who has denied any wrongdoing, is accused of using “violence, coercion, surprise or threat” in the alleged assault that took place on the set of “Les Volets verts” (”The Green Shutters').
His lawyer stated that doctors have advised against his appearance at the trial due to his health condition. The lawyer expressed Depardieu's desire to attend the trial and present his side of the story.
Prosecutors allege that the 75-year-old actor trapped the victims between his legs and groped their buttocks, genitals, chest, and breasts over their clothes.
The trial occurs amidst France's ongoing reckoning with sexual violence following the #MeToo movement, particularly within the cinema industry.
One victim, a 53-year-old production designer, reported that Depardieu made sexual remarks before physically assaulting her on set. Witnesses confirmed the incident, and the victim was granted a seven-day leave following a psychiatrist examination.
Another woman on the film set had previously complained about Depardieu touching her buttocks and behaving insultingly towards her.
Despite the allegations, Depardieu has received support from some quarters, including French President Emmanuel Macron and members of the film industry.
