Georgios Giakoumakis Celtic transfer news as Greek striker pursuit remains on despite Werder Bremen 'bid'

Celtic's move for Georgios Giakoumakis is not dead in the water despite the striker being pictured in Germany amid Werder Bremen's interest, according to a report.

Record Sport revealed last week that Ange Postecoglou is a fan of the Greek striker, who is set for a move away from relegated Eredivisie side VVV-Venlo this summer.

A fee of around £2.5m should be enough to secure a deal as alternative Thomas Henry appears set for Belgian side Gent instead.

Giakoumakis bagged an eye-popping 26 goals in 30 top-flight games in the Netherlands despite his team's poor fortunes.

Celtic have competition however with Werder Bremen looking to beef up their frontline for a push to return to the Bundesliga.

But their opening gambit has been knocked back by VVV, according to Greek newspaper Sportime.

They have been offered €2m plus add-ons for the 26-year-old but that's not good enough for the Eredivisie side – and so the Premiership hopefuls are still in the race.

Their German competition are said to have an "advantage" but negotiations continue as the Hoops look to add another attacking option.

On Wednesday night, manager Postecoglou insisted new arrivals are coming after seeing off AZ Alkmaar 2-0 in the Europa League play-off first leg.

He said: "Like I said a couple of days ago we're getting to the end of the window.

"So what I do know is we'll have players in before the end of the window."
