Georginio Rutter deal gives ‘indication’ San Francisco 49ers will complete Leeds United takeover

The San Francisco 49ers were heavily involved in breaking Leeds United’s transfer record to sign Georginio Rutter. A report by The Athletic claims commitments to future payments was a potential stumbling block in getting the deal over the line.

As is the case with most clubs, Leeds stagger their transfer periods over the length of the player’s contract. Uncertainty remains over the Whites’ ownership situation as the 49ers’ influence continues to grow.

Andrea Radrizzani acquired 100 percent of the club in 2017 and has guided United back to the promised land of the Premier League. Since returning to the top flight, the Italian has invited investment from the NFL franchise, who now own 44% of the club.

It is expected that a full takeover from the 49ers should take place before January 2024. With that in mind, a complex chat needed to take place regarding Rutter’s transfer.

LeedsLive understands the fee is around £25million, with add-ons set to inflate that figure towards the £35million mark. Doing so would leapfrog ahead of Rodrigo’s move from Valencia as Leeds’ most expensive transfer.

The Athletic’s piece claims the proposed new owners were influential in getting the deal done. Jesse Marsch’s side sit two points above the drop zone and relegation to the Championship would surely scupper any takeover.

Breaking the bank to give Leeds their best possible chance to survive indicates commitment and a possible indication to future endeavours. Signing a new, flashy forward hints at the 49ers being serious about a complete acquisition - providing the club retains its top-flight status.
