Georgia’s Tykee Smith names young CB as player to watch

Georgia football has a battle at cornerback as the Bulldogs prepare for the season opener on Saturday versus UT Martin.

Former Georgia starting cornerback Kelee Ringo is now a Philadelphia Eagle, which leaves an open spot opposite of returning starter Kamari Lassiter.

Third-year Georgia defensive back Tykee Smith praised redshirt freshman Julian Humphrey this week as a player that has impressed this offseason.

Somebody that’s been really coming along in camp, I think Julian Humphrey’s been having a real good camp, playing with the confidence level and then just being physically gifted that he is with him being able to run and look the part out there. Just trying to get him to keep coming along and help the team as best as possible. Looking forward to seeing him come along.

The former four-star was rated as the No. 13 cornerback and the No. 88 player overall in the 2022 recruiting class.

At 6-foot, 190 pounds, Humphrey has drawn praise for his physicality and work ethic, which are tools that head coach Kirby Smart values.

The competition includes Humphrey, sophomores Daylen Everette and Nyland Green, along with freshman A.J. Harris.

Smart told the media on Monday that the battle is still ongoing.

The other guys have all competed there, had really good competition between Nyland, AJ, Julian, and Daylen. They’ve all four taken reps and gotten work there. I don’t know that we’re ready to say anybody’s stood out, to be honest. We’ll have practices this week that are game speed, game-like. We may make a determination this week or a determination every game. But staying healthy, and all those guys have done a good job.

Georgia is returning a lot of talent in the cornerback room and it will be interesting to see who ends up starting opposite Kamari Lassiter.
