Georgia's head football coach, Kirby Smart, has agreed to a contract extension that solidifies his position as the highest-paid coach in college football. The new deal, announced on Thursday, includes an annual salary of $13 million, making Smart the top earner in the coaching ranks.
As part of the contract extension, Smart will receive a salary increase of $1.75 million per year, tying him to the Bulldogs through 2033. Additionally, he stands to earn up to $1.55 million annually in bonuses based on the new 12-team playoff structure, an increase from the previous terms.
Georgia also extended the contract of athletic director Josh Brooks through 2030, with a salary raise of $100,000 per year, bringing his total compensation to $1.275 million over the contract period. Brooks is eligible for up to $200,000 in bonuses based on the overall performance of the athletic program.
Smart's new salary surpasses that of Clemson's Dabo Swinney, who is set to make $11 million in 2024, making Smart the highest-paid coach in the nation.
Since taking over as head coach in 2016, Smart has led Georgia to unprecedented success, including back-to-back national titles in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have compiled an impressive record of 94-16, with a 56-9 mark in the SEC. Georgia has won two SEC titles and consistently ranked in the Top 10 of The Associated Press rankings during Smart's tenure.
Smart expressed gratitude for the administration's commitment to the football program, acknowledging the challenges in collegiate athletics and the everchanging landscape. He emphasized his pride in representing his alma mater and looks forward to continuing the relationship for years to come.
Georgia President Jere W. Morehead praised Smart for setting the standard of excellence in college football and exciting the Bulldog nation with the team's recent successes. Morehead also commended Brooks for his leadership as athletic director, positioning UGA athletics for success in a rapidly changing sports environment.
With a strong roster of returning players, led by quarterback Carson Beck, Georgia is poised to remain a top contender for the national championship in 2024.
