Georgia running back Trevor Etienne was arrested early Sunday on charges of drunken driving, reckless driving, and other offenses, according to jail records. Etienne, who is the projected starting running back for the Bulldogs, was booked into the Athens-Clark County Jail at 4:35 a.m. and released on bonds totaling about $1,800 less than an hour later. The additional charges against Etienne include failure to maintain a lane, improper driving, and affixing materials that reduce visibility through the windows or windshield.
It remains unclear whether Etienne has obtained legal representation at this time. The university has acknowledged the arrest but declined to provide further comment on the matter.
Etienne, aged 19, transferred midyear from Florida to Georgia, where he led the Gators with nine touchdowns last season and established himself as one of the team's most dynamic playmakers. As the younger brother of former Clemson star and current Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne, Trevor has two years of eligibility remaining.
Coach Kirby Smart has previously expressed concerns about player safety on the road. In January 2023, following Georgia's national title celebration, two tragic incidents occurred involving members of the football program. Offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy lost their lives in a crash while LeCroy and defensive tackle Jalen Carter were reportedly racing.
According to reports, there were at least 15 traffic stops involving Bulldogs football program members driving at excessive speeds in 2023, with three instances of driving under the influence. Team policy mandates that athletes convicted of DUI must serve a suspension of at least one game. Georgia's upcoming season opener is scheduled against Clemson on August 31.
