Sometimes, football players can have tunnel vision. They’re focused on the play in front of them, what the design is, what their opponent is doing, what their job is on any given snap.
Even in big moments in big games, some things can fly by them.
That was apparently the case for veteran Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, who told the SEC Network that he didn’t realize that injured quarterback Carson Beck had reentered the game when the Bulldogs lined up for first-and-goal in overtime of the SEC Championship.
Beck had missed a majority of the game with what appeared to be an elbow injury. In his absence, backup Gunner Stockton had been guiding the Bulldogs against the Texas Longhorns.
But on the penultimate play in overtime, Stockton had his helmet knocked off on a scramble for a first down. So, by the rules, he had to exit the game. Beck entered and handed the ball off to Trevor Etienne for a four-yard touchdown.
And Ratledge – a fifth-year guard, two-time national champion, and an All-American last season – didn’t seem to notice. He was locked in.
“I didn’t realize Carson was in the game. I heard everybody cheering and I’m looking to see what front (Texas) is in. I turn around and I just see Carson staring at me.”

Whether Beck plays in the College Football Playoff for Georgia remains to be seen.
