Georgia Holt, actress, singer and Cher's mother, dead at 96

Singer Cher has shared the news of her mother Georgia Holt's passing over the weekend.

The singer and actress, who appeared in a number of well-known US TV shows, was 96.

"Mom is gone," Cher tweeted on Saturday evening, US time. No other details about Holt's death have yet been made public.

In September, Cher shared that Holt had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia commenting that, "Home is the best medicine for her."

Before Cher became a household name, Holt acted in various films and TV shows of the 1950s including I Love Lucy and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.

In 1980, Holt recorded an album named Honky Tonk Woman, which included covers, originals and a duet with Cher.

The recordings were lost until 2013 when Holt found them in her garage and sent them to her musical director.

They were eventually released as an album which debuted at number 13 on Billboard's Heatseeker album chart.

The release of the album sent Holt on a promotional tour which saw her appear on The Ellen Show and The Tonight Show.

The same year Cher, released a television documentary about her mother titled, Dear Mom, Love Cher, which featured interviews with Holt, Holt's daughter Georganne LaPiere and her two grandchildren, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.

In 2014, she appeared with Bono on season six on Ru Paul's Drag Race for an interview challenge.
