A Georgia high school student who was hit in the head with a baseball bat has died after spending three weeks in a coma, the family announced on Tuesday.
Gainesville High School (Ga.) student Jeremy Medina, 18, was injured during baseball practice on Nov. 20 when he was hit in the head with a bat while in the batting cage on campus, the school system said. According to CBS Sports, school principal Jamie Green said there was no horseplay, misconduct, or intent to make contact with a person.
He spent three weeks in a coma and was declared brain dead less than a week before passing away, according to CBS, which reported that he would be an organ donor.
Medina pitched and caught for the team in the 2022 season. Gainesville and students took part in a Pray4Jeremy campaign led by his family.
“We know Jeremy was and will always be in God’s hands and we will see him soon. We are grateful for all the prayers and support over the last three weeks, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding as we take time now to be with our family,” the Medina family said in a statement.
An honor walk will take place at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where Medina was a patient, to commemorate his desire to be an organ donor, according to The Athletic.
