Georgia football TE Darnell Washington will miss spring practice

On Tuesday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart informed reporters that tight end Darnell Washington will miss spring practice due to a “lower leg injury.”

Smart noted that Brock Bowers will miss spring as well, however, that news originally surfaced in February. Bowers underwent labrum surgery to repair an injury that he actually played through for the last few games of his freshman season.

Washington did not have the sophomore season he had hoped for in 2021. A foot injury slowed him down early on, allowing for Bowers to emerge as the team’s leading receiver. Washington, a former five-star recruit out of Las Vegas, finished 2021 with only 10 receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown while playing in 11 games.

With Washington and Bowers both out for spring ball, all eyes turn to Arik Gilbert, who transferred to UGA last offseason after a very successful freshman year with LSU. Gilbert was not with the program last season for undisclosed reasons, but this is a great opportunity for the talented receiver to step up with a depleted depth chart.
