George Washington University has announced that operations have returned to normal following the clearance of an anti-Israel encampment and the subsequent arrest of numerous protesters by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department on Wednesday morning.
In a statement released by the university, it was confirmed that the police conducted a safe and orderly operation to disperse the demonstrators from the illegal encampment located on GW's University Yard. The university expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the MPD and noted that there were no reports of serious injuries during the operation.
According to the authorities, pepper spray was deployed by officers to manage individuals who were resisting police instructions. Despite this, final exams and commencement activities are set to proceed as scheduled.
As a precautionary measure, University Yard and Kogan Plaza will remain closed until the conclusion of the commencement on May 19. The university emphasized that due to safety concerns arising from the recent illegal demonstrations and the ongoing exams, all campus activities, including those involving free expression, will now require reservations through the Division for Student Affairs. Additionally, the school stated that no sound amplification will be allowed for such events on campus during this period.
