George Calombaris Responds To Heinous Review Of New Restaurant: ‘Dead Flies In The Soy Sauce’

So fun fact: George Calombaris — who you’ll remember from MasterChef… oh, and for the whole wage theft debacle — has opened a new restaurant in Sydney’s Inner West called Double Happy Chinese, located in Annandale.

Shortly after opening, the restaurant was reviewed by the food critic at Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food and the headline was pretty much the last thing you want written about your restaurant, especially while trying to build up a customer base.

Just have a go at it below, would ya?

“Dead flies in the soy sauce: Our critic’s verdict of George Calombaris’ Chinese restaurant,” the headline reads. Ouchhhhhh.

Later on in the article, it goes into detail about the deceased insect sauce, writing: “One night, there’s a cluster of dead flies floating in the soy sauce on our table – the kind of flies that invade my kitchen when fruit turns. I’ve been trapping the buggers with detergent and apple cider vinegar, so it’s good to know I can just leave the Kikkoman out.”

Not what you want when you eat out, is it?

Anywho, Calombaris — who is no stranger to controversy — addressed the hideous but fair review and was actually a good sport about it. I mean, you’d have to be when you’re caught with your pants down like this, right? Or rather, caught with dead flies in your soy sauce.

“Feedback, whether positive or negative, is always valuable,” he shared online.

“As a team, we are committed to working closely with our managers and chefs to continue improving our food and service every single day.”

He went on to thank everyone who has dined at his new restaurant and hopefully avoided consuming the dead fly-laden soy sauce.

“A huge thank you to our regulars and supporters. Your love means to world to us. We’ll keep striving to make every experience better than the last,” he concluded.

Days later, he took to his Instagram Story to share the following AI-generated image of himself holding bug spray.

Again, props to the guy for being able to laugh at himself and take constructive criticism, but I’d give him even greater props if his soy sauce wasn’t a bug trap… and we probably could’ve done without the wage theft as well.
