Geordie Shore star Natalie Phillips climbing Mount Snowdon on one leg for charity

Former Geordie Shore star Natalie Phillips is embarking on a "mammoth challenge" by climbing Mount Snowdon using just one leg.

Natalie is taking on the unique trek in aid of Amp Camp Kids - a charity which raises money to send amputee children and their families on a free holiday.

The 31-year-old is the only non-amputee in the group of 50 people tackling the gruelling challenge on just one leg on Sunday.

She will wear a strap which will go around her waist and left leg to raise it off the ground and will be using crutches to get herself up Wales' highest mountain.

"I can't decide whether I'm daft or crazy," Natalie told ChronicleLive.

"It is going to be an absolute mammoth challenge.

"I've taken part in walks with the charity before and see amputees struggle. I feel very much part of what is happening but wasn't doing anything to understand what amputees are going through.

"I'm going to be using crutches and my right leg only to get up there. My left leg is not going to touch the ground throughout the walk."

Natalie jumped at the chance of getting involved with the non-profit organisation about a year ago after it was launched by friend Ben Lovell.

Ben, from Halifax, West Yorkshire, had to have his leg amputated above the knee in 2017 after he developed a blood clot.

Following a dark year, during which he contemplated suicide, Ben fought through his mental and physical struggles and made helping other amputees his lifelong mission.

He created Amp Camp, a unique rehabilitation camp in Tenerife where guests can spend a week listening to Ben and sharing their own experiences.

They receive a personal chef, nutritionist, fitness programme and work on all the things they think they need to help them move forward with their new life.

Now he has decided to focus on children in the same way and created Amp Camp Kids.

Natalie, who is now an ambassador at the charity, is hoping to raise £13,000 to send six young amputees to Tenerife for the retreat.

She has been preparing for tackling Mount Snowdon by climbing North East landmarks such as Penshaw Monument and Roseberry Topping.

"The training has been brutal I'm not going to lie," said Natalie, from Consett.

"I'm really nervous, though I'm not sure why. I know I'll do it and I usually don't doubt myself in these kind of situations.

"I am under no illusion about how difficult this is going to be but this foundation has completely changed my life so raising this money is extremely close to my heart.

"I want to give back to the foundation and the kids what they have given me - the greatest of joy."

Natalie quit Geordie Shore last year midway through series 21 after admitting she felt "too old" to be in the house.

She says Amp Camp Kids has given her something new to focus on and has set her sights on completing Sunday's 1,085m climb in half a day.

"Geordie Shore made me more confident in who I am," she said. "It encouraged me to be more out there and vocal.

"Since leaving the show I wanted to use my status to enable other people to accomplish things.

"The people I've met through Amp Camp have blown me away. I am so amazed at how unfazed they are.

"They take life as it is and just get on with it and it's so inspirational. The charity gave me a purpose and something to focus on after Geordie Shore.

"This means the world to me, more than anything else I've ever done."
