'Geordie Maradona' - Newcastle United youngster tipped to have 'exciting' future by Bristol Rovers team-mate

Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson has been tipped to reach the very top by Bristol Rovers team-mate Alex Rodman. Anderson was on hand to help the Gas to promotion to League One at the weekend, scoring the vital seventh goal that helped Rovers into a automatic spot on the final day of the League Two season.

The 7-0 win over Scunthorpe saw Joey Barton's side leapfrog Northampton Town into third, meaning they secured promotion in the most dramatic of circumstances. Since his arrival at the Memorial Stadium, Anderson has bagged eight goals and five assists. At just 19-years-old, he could be the most promising prospect Newcastle have produced in years.

In April, he picked up the EFL Young Player of the Month Award and is said to have plenty of admirers in the Championship.

And Rovers team mate Alex Rodman reckons the Magpies have a serious talent on their hands. Speaking on the BBC's Monday Night Club alongside Mark Chapman, Micah Richards, Chris Sutton and Adam Crafton, Rodman said: He [Joey Barton] had two windows to get in the players he wanted.

"He made some really shrewd signings in January. We brought in James Connolly from Cardiff and Elliot Anderson who is dubbed the ‘Geordie Maradona’. He’s called Billy Elliot because he just dances. He’s going to be some player and it’s going to be a pleasure to watch him as he progresses through the leagues. I’m really interested to see where he goes next year, Newcastle have got a really exciting player on their hands with him. He came in and he’s been phenomenal."
