Geordie Hospital to return with six new episodes - highlighting the 'warmth and charm' of our NHS heroes

After its first run was much-loved in the North East and beyond, Channel 4 has confirmed the cameras are returning to Newcastle's hospitals to film a second series of Geordie Hospital.

The first series ran through January and February 2022 - and saw hospital staff like specialist nurse Sean Marshall-Kellie and chaplain Rev'd Capt Katie Watson followed during busy shifts at the Freeman, the RVI, the Great North Children's Hospital and the Newcastle Dental Hospital. Heart-warming patient stories, including that of Kit Matthews who had a heart transplant and talented dancer Amelia Mills who underwent spinal surgery, showed off the hard work of our city's NHS heroes.

The Geordie Hospital series finale - emotional viewing, like the rest of the series - led to those watching to call for another series. Now Channel 4 has given those people their wish.

Rita Daniels, Channel 4's commissioning editor, said: "After the huge success of the first series, we couldn’t wait to head back up North to further spotlight the absolutely incredible work of the staff at Newcastle Hospitals, as they deliver outstanding care with ubiquitous Geordie warmth and charm."

The show is made by production company Curve Media - and the producers were praised by many of the patients and staff featured for their empathetic and supportive approach. The show's aim was to show that hospital life in 2022 was about far more than just Covid-19 and to highlight the work of many unsung NHS heroes.

Curve's chief exec Camilla Lewis explained the team were chuffed to be heading back onto the wards. She said: "We’re incredibly excited to be going back to film for a second season of Geordie Hospital with the amazing staff at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals as they once again open their doors and hearts to us all." Dates for when the new series will air have yet to be revealed.
