A 52-year-old man has been granted bail after appearing in court charged with a hit and run in the Darwin CBD on Tuesday night.

NT Police allege Geoffrey Rodwell hit a 51-year-old woman with his car and ran her over around 8pm on February 15, failing to stop and help afterward.

The woman was laying on the road when the incident took place, police said in a statement.

The 51-year-old was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, and was still in a critical condition.

A crime scene was set up on Lindsay Street, where the incident took place, and police used CCTV footage to identify the white sedan allegedly involved in the incident.

Police arrested and charged Mr Rodwell on Thursday, after tracing the car to Darwin's northern suburbs on Wednesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said motorists were required by law to stop and report the incident if they hit another person with their car.

"This man didn't and he's been charged accordingly," he said on Thursday.

"Fleeing from a crash scene after hitting someone is an exercise in futility.

"We have shown time and again, that such offenders will be identified and brought before court."

Authorities thanked the public for their assistance in identifying the alleged offender.

Mr Rodwell appeared in court on Thursday and will return on March 10.
