Geoffrey Boycott hits out at Dave Brailsford’s role in Andrew Strauss’ ECB review

Cricket commentator Geoffrey Boycott has slammed cycling chief Sir Dave Brailsford ’s part in the ECB high-performance review panel.

Andrew Strauss is leading a cricket review panel panel made up of 'figures from the business world, the media and sports science and administration, as well as cricket'. Strauss is an admirer of Brailsford's 'marginal gains' philosophy which led British Cycling to top the medal table in the London 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

However, controversial Yorkshireman Boycott has taken issue with Brailsford and Sir Clive Woodward, the England rugby World Cup-winning coach, being appointed to the panel stating they should stick to their own sports.

In his rant on the Vaughany and Tuffers Cricket Club podcast, Boycott said: "I don't see how David Brailsford is going to go about that. What's that rugby man (Clive Woodward), as good as they are at their sports. "Because, I or Michael (Vaughan) wouldn't come in and tell them how to cycle or tell them how to play rugby union.

"No we watch it (cycling) because it's a nice spectacle, I'm not going to go in and tell him, I don't know anything about it."

Brailsford is well respected for his philosophy and England rugby head coach Eddie Jones spoke to Brailsford last year about how best to keep England at the top of their game. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is also an admirer of Brailsford and discussed the fear of defeat with the cycling chief who led Team Sky to multiple Tour De France victories.

At the time Tuchel said: "He was very concerned about not wanting to enter a state of mind where you fear the loss of a record more than the hunger and adventure of winning the next race. I don’t want to enter this, either, so the refocus is always part of the process."

Strauss is currently preparing his report but has warned those at the helm of England and Wales cricket to create a manageable schedule allowing cricketers to play both Test and T20 cricket at a time of "unbelievable change".
