Gentleman Jack season 2 release date confirmed and what to expect from new series

Historical drama Gentleman Jack is back. The BBC series is about Anne Lister - a real life landowner and industrialist in 19th century Yorkshire.

The show, from Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright, is based on Lister’s diaries, which were written largely in code, and detailed a lifetime of lesbian relationships. It stars Suranne Jones in the lead role and when the first series aired in 2019, it proved to be a big hit with audiences.

Now it has been revealed that season two is coming soon. Here’s everything we know so far.

Gentleman Jack season 2 plot

The action in the second series of Gentleman Jack takes place in 1834 - two years after season one. Anne Lister and Ann Walker - played by Sophie Rundle - have set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife.

They are determined to combine their estates and become a power couple. But the move is proving to be controversial.

A BBC spokesman, giving further details on the plot, said: “Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous. Series two will again use the real life diaries of Anne Lister - part of which were written in code - as its source, with every part of Lister’s story based in historical fact and the five million words she wrote in her journals."

Gentleman Jack season 2 release date

The new series premieres on BBC One on Sunday, April 10 at 9pm. It will also be available on BBC iPlayer - with further new episodes released weekly.

It will take over the time slot of Peaky Blinders once the period crime drama concludes on April 3. Season one of Gentleman Jack is available now on BBC iPlayer.

Was Gentleman Jack cancelled?

Filming for the new series of Gentleman Jack was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. It was thought season two would arrive in the summer of 2021 but the release date was put back to April this year.

Production company Lookout Point released a statement confirming that the show was postponed. It said: "Reluctantly we have decided to delay the start of production of Gentleman Jack series two due to the ongoing Covid-19 emergency. Huge thanks to our cast and crew, and to our incredible, inspiring fans for their understanding.”
